Kate Volker

Kate Volker currently lives in Aberdeen, Scotland, with her husband and two young sons. She has worked for C3 since its inception, cataloging records and creating lesson plans for the MarcoPolo project.

Kate graduated from the University of Durham, England, in 1988 with a B.A. in history. After moving to Washington, D.C., in 1989, she worked as a teaching assistant for children with severe learning difficulties, autism, and emotional disturbance. She then won a full academic scholarship to the American University, where she earned her Master of Arts degree in Elementary Education. While completing her M.A., Kate acted as a research assistant within the Education Department at the American University. She worked on many different projects including: providing research support for Failing at Fairness, a book concerning gender equity in the classroom, published by Scribners in 1994; revising, editing, and contributing to a new edition of the educational textbook Teachers, Schools and Society; and researching diverse educational and sociological issues at the request of faculty members.

Upon completing her M.A., Kate went on to teach at Murch Elementary School in Washington, D.C. While at Murch, she developed innovative approaches to utilising technology in the classroom, including educational software programs and the Internet, and she participated in a technology-based distance-learning project in science.

Kate returned to England in 1996 where she taught second grade and worked as a substitute teacher at a school for autistic children until she joined C3.
