Karen Levy

C3 cataloger Karen Levy is an educator from suburban Washington, D.C. Originally from New York and Pennsylvania, Karen attended American University in Washington, D.C., where she obtained her B.A. in Elementary Education. While at American University, she completed an internship with the Department of Education, where she engaged in research and wrote a publication describing federal funding programs for various minority groups. Following college, Karen accepted a job with Very Special Arts, an organization dedicated to promoting arts programs for people with physical and mental challenges. At VSA, Karen was a project coordinator in the development department. She worked to obtain funding for the organization and assisted with the planning for numerous large-scale fundraising projects.

In 1988, Karen accepted a teaching position in the District of Columbia Public Schools. She started out teaching first grade and has been teaching sixth grade for the last 14 years. While teaching, Karen obtained her Master’s Degree from the School of Education and Human Development at the George Washington University. Karen currently teaches sixth grade at Murch School, a culturally diverse neighborhood school in northwest Washington. She also serves as the school's science resource person and maintains the science resource area for teachers. During the 2001 school year, she was very flattered to receive a nomination for the American Teacher Awards, a program sponsored by the Disney Corporation.

When she is not teaching or working for C3, Karen spends time playing the piano, reading mysteries, and bike riding along the Potomac River. She also devotes many hours to volunteer work at a local fire department near her home in Potomac, Maryland. She has served in the fire department as a volunteer for 13 years and responds to fire/rescue calls as an Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter. She has served as a member of the department’s Board of Directors for the last 2 years. Karen finds the work to be both challenging and gratifying.
